I’m somewhat of an hypocrite

Digital privacy is important for a lot of reasons. Digital privacy should be as valued as it is for when you’re in the real world like when you have a confidential conversation with you and another person. No one wants their private information out out for the everyone to see. Private information like someone obtaining your credit card information or social security information.Identity theft is the more extreme cases but other instances is companies using your search or click history to tailor their ads towards you. This is the more common type of reason why digital privacy is important.

When it comes to varying algorithms I think it can be a good and bad thing. Coming from someone who grew up and is contnueing to move through the digital age, things ads tailoring to the things that I search online is made to seem good. I use social medias apps like instagram, and tiktok. Especially tiktok where your “for you page” (fyp is the page where random videos pop up on the timeline that you don’t follow) is heavly tailored to your likes and dislikes. In that context, I like that my usage is being tracked in a way because I only get to see the tiktoks or videos that is tailored towhat I want to watch. I see information that interests me. But also where I see it as bad, comes to the risk of your secure information being compromised or breached and it reaches those extreme cases of your identity being used.

This weeks readings helped me come to terms that I somewhat of an hypocrite when it comes to tracking. Usually, if you ask me about it, I would be against it of course. But, when it comes to certain social media apps i’m okay with tracking only because it tailors to my personal needs. It’s only because of what I want, but honestly I can see both ways.
